Track Name: Time Enough at Last
Numbly he opens his eyes
Then he starts to realise
The broken shards of the buildings lying around him
Seem to be his home town
He picks up his suitcase, his tie, and his hat
He looks around at the landscape
Looming overhead is a tall grey building
Cardboard boxes pouring out

At first he shies away from the building
Proceeding to the left towards the general store
Piles and piles of food await at his feet
He sits down on his throne, begins to ponder
For hours he lies upon a couch, thinking about
The day's events and his unlikely future
Before he decides that he must join the rest of them
He decides to give the building a try

Inside the boxes lie several spectra of colour
Words set in stone on the printed page
He pulls them out one by one, dusting them off
Carefully sorting them into piles
Finally he finishes and sits down on the marble
Picking one up set aside for later
He opens up the cover and begins to read
Off of his face his glasses shatter
Track Name: I Stayed
I'm not a conversational person, but the people come up to me
They like to tell me the stories that they saw on the TV
I haven't the heart to tell them that nothing they've heard is true
The screens behind the windows never show the current news

And as I make my way out of the streets
Up your old driveway even though I know your pleas
The floor creaks upon entry, alerting that I'm there
Leaving me totally vulnerable to your cutting glass stare

I stayed
Even though I said I'd go home
I stayed
I couldn't leave you all alone
I stayed
And you didn't believe in me
I stayed

First you throw the potted plants; then you throw the vase
I shudder at the thought of other things that you could break
And as I see the shards of specked blue, magenta, and green
I know that any other person would just leave the scene

But I stayed
Even though I said I'd go home
I stayed
I couldn't leave you all alone
I stayed
And you didn't believe in me
I stayed
Track Name: Smoke
Looking out from the car window
Parked across the street from the drugstore
I can't listen to his words on the phone
I drop it on the seat and start the car
But you're too far

Everything is breaking all around you
But there's nothing they can do to get you out
Sirens blaring out from the ambulances
Wake up and smell the smoke

Picking up the pieces off the ground
I spy a small school portrait in the newspaper
The caption has been burned off into ash
But your eyes still look unblinkingly at me
I can't see

Everything is breaking all around you
But there's nothing they can do to get you out
Sirens blaring out from the ambulances
Wake up and smell the smoke

Everything is breaking all around you
But there's nothing they can do to get you out
Sirens blaring out from the ambulances
Wake up and smell the smoke
Track Name: Little Bird
The bird flies in through the bathroom window
He takes me out for breakfast and lunch
It makes me feel a little more for his problems
Nevertheless, it takes my precious time

His telephone calls interrupt the board meetings
His faxing of flyers is getting on my nerves
All his emails go into my spam folder
But yet, to my dismay, it is not enough
Track Name: Captain Crunch
Captain Crunch
Thanks a bunch
The boys at school said you wouldn't show up
That just goes to show how much they know 'bout
What you're like

Captain Crunch
Thanks for lunch
You took me out after the hospital
It made me feel better, it made me feel whole
You're so great

Captain Crunch
Thanks for the punch
Although the girl just hit me back
I stood right up, and started to attack
She laughed it off and hit my face
My teeth fell out all over the place
And I fell on the floor with a blow to my head
The boys standing 'round, they thought I was dead
They picked me up and took me inside
The girl who had hit me was telling them lies and they
Sent me home
With my dad
And not you
Captain Crunch
Track Name: Hues
Never wanted to hurt you
Are a wretch in our view
Of the isle, calm and blue
-faced strangers, only two
Hundred tears, birdies coo
ing for her loving you
Track Name: Do I Have To?
Everyone is asking me:
Do I have to?
Do I have to?
Do I have to?
Do I have to?
Do I have to?
Do I have to?
Do I have to?
Do I have to?
Do I have to?

And the answer is no
And the answer will always be no
I can't make you do anything though I'd like you to
But given the choice I know you won't
You're too self-centred, arrogant, that type of fool
And yes, you needn't mention that I am one too
At least I'd go ahead and do anything for you
Can you say as much?

Do I have to?
Do I have to?
Do I have to?
Do I have to?
Do I have to?
Do I have to?
Do I have to?
Do I have to?
Do I have to?
Someday, yes you will
Track Name: Eleanor Roosevelt
Eleanor Roosevelt was a wonderful lady
She knew all the people's names
She took into account all the people who couldn't get out
And couldn't have all they needed
Nevertheless, her husband confessed
He totally messed up again
He couldn't make it up, he couldn't make it up
The monster died in a painter's chair

Ellie wept and Anna cried
Ellie wept and Anna cried
Ellie wept and Anna cried
Ellie wept and Anna cried

Eleanor Roosevelt was a powerful speaker
She told us what she knew
Always just a few steps ahead
And ever pushing through
But then, 1960, an illness attacked
Her health went on the decline
I'm sorry, so sorry, for everything, Anna
November 7th, 1962

Ellie's dead and Anna died
Ellie's dead and Anna died
Ellie's dead and Anna died
Ellie's dead and Anna died
Track Name: If You'll Listen...
Open up a hole in which you can place your broken life
Look into the past, look for a moment no-one hated you in
See there's someone somewhere out there who loves you always
Know that even if you're stuck that you can always come to this hide
Away
Please stay
Away

Hear the words of your friend trying to console you after you have been
Discard all of the pointed threats, the things they said to you—not one of them is worth it and
Show all of your feelings to him; maybe he will help you when you need it most and
Cry your eyes out in your sleeve; you know it feels much better when you get it out and
Scared
In there
I'm scared

Break through all your mental barriers; I know you can—I've seen you do it
Dismantle your city and move it somewhere else
Slash through all the jungle's vines to get to somewhere where you feel safe
Cut through every flower stem; they'd make a nice present, darling, and
Burn
Return
We burn
Track Name: In Retrospect
I don't love you anymore
I don't know why I still stick around
I don't need you anymore
I don't

You said you wouldn't be gone for good
You knew I'd listen to your simple words
You said everything was still okay
You lied

We wanted to see the sights of the world
We'd just be me and, yeah, my girl
We thought we'd see every last town that there was
We failed

They said you are a liar and a cheat
They said you will never be nice or kind
They said you ruin other people's lives
They're right

I see the crystalline portraits of you
I see the purple mountains—distant, but in view
I hear your voice shouting your vicious lies
I cry
Track Name: Prosthetics
We met at the gas station and you were in a hurry
It appeared quite strange to me as you didn't have a car
I walked up to you and asked you what you needed
And come to think of it, I never found out

You blow me away with your determination
You throw me away—I never felt this low before
I know it's a waste, but I can't stop running
I don't have a say, but I keep on trying

I don't believe in your hopes and dreams
I don't believe in your empty screams
I know someone is behind those eyes
So why not come out, give the world a try?

We play games like pinball and table tennis
My basement is filled with arcade machines
One day, I hit you in the forehead with a ping pong ball
Your eyes fell out of their sockets and rolled around on the floor

I don't believe in your prosthetises
I don't believe you're what you seem
I know someone is behind that smile
So why not come out, just for a short while?

When we talked for the last time
You pulled your ear from your head
When I peered in, I jumped back in surprise
For all I saw was a bag of prosthetic lies
Track Name: Raffle Tickets, Torn in Two
I looked at what you said and thought "man, that's adorable"
And then I realised that wasn't what you said
It made me feel bad for all the things that I thought
And then I thought them again, and then I thought them again
And every time you make me cry
It makes me happy, it makes me happy
You only called me up to criticize
But it makes me happy, it makes me happy

I don't want you to shut up and I care about what you have to say

Please don't give up on me
I know you've got a lot on your mind
When we speak, that feeling of ecstasy
That otherwise is nigh on impossible to find

You're tearing me in two

You made me into a nervous wreck the other day
And then I realised I couldn't take it any more
I packed my stuff up and left for another town
But you really wouldn't leave me alone
You talked to a friend who told me to talk to you
He told me to talk to you, he told me to talk to you
I tried to say I didn't want to talk to you
I didn't want to talk to you, I didn't want to talk to you

Please leave me alone—I hate your guts—I don't care about what you say

Please just give up on me
I know you've got a lot on your mind
When we speak, that feeling of misery
Makes me feel as if I'm maligned

You're tearing me in two
Track Name: Open a Light
Take another five pill purchase
Send it to your bones—into your bones
Ripping up the beautiful marrow
Sell it for loans—make up the loans

And send the backwash down the backstreets
And open hands with frowns over your eyelids
All you ever saw you realise is gone—is gone—is gone—is gone

Take the fourteen hundred people in blue
Their implied sorrows have an impact on you
Crying slowly, choking back all the sobs
Because they have a new version of their old god

And send the messenger to message all your enemies
And write the careful words down in your will
All you ever saw you realise is gone

And open up the skies to the whispering prophets
Open up the room to become independent
Open up a light
Open up a light
Open up the doors

And blow all the kisses to your right hand man
And know this is the last time he could ever give a damn
All you ever saw you realise—you realise—you realise—you realise is gone
Track Name: Letters to Edward Sharp
Pouring salt into the gash
A bittersweet singing sensation
Never mind where it came from
It's here to stay

Torn discarded envelopes littering the floor
Decay has taken its toll on the mind of Edward Sharp
But that's another banker for another day
But do tell his stories someday—oh, someday
When the time is ever so ripe, the fruit in the gardens of Hell
Bittersweet flavours mixing together with the gnashing of jaws
Opening and closing, ripping to shreds

Is that not what you came for in the spring
And stayed for much too long?
In the House of your Fathers who laid their heads to sleep
Oh so long ago in the cavern in which you wept for the sickness
Track Name: At My Best
I'll never see you again
I'm sad to say this is the end
There are so many things I didn't tell you
But I need you to know I love you

But you're all awash on the shore and you're not keeping score
And you know where to pull back all the tide and let go
You see through the bushes, past all the sandcastles and bees
Everything blowing so slightly in the summer breeze

I'm sorry that you had to see me here
I know I'm not exactly at my best
Please forgive all I've done
I didn't mean no harm

And how the painters sit back in the trees
And how the poets fall down to their knees

But you're all awash on the shore and you're not keeping score
And you know where to pull back all the tide and let go
You see through the bushes, past all the sandcastles and bees
Everything blowing so slightly in the summer breeze

We won't grow up again—it's over
All of the people I hold near and dear have left
You're the only one who's stayed for better or for worse
And still I know I'm not exactly at my best

But you're all awash on the shore and you're not keeping score
And you know where to pull back all the tide and let go
You see through the bushes, past all the sandcastles and bees
Everything blowing so slightly in the summer breeze
